  • Penetration Piston: A 50 mm diameter piston is used to penetrate the soil or pavement material.
  • Extension Rods and Connectors: These pieces allow for adjusting the penetration depth and connecting the piston to the proving ring.
  • Proving Ring: Measures the applied load during the penetration test.
  • Dial Gauge: Measures the penetration depth of the piston into the soil.
  • Datum Bar: Supports the dial gauge and ensures accurate measurement of penetration.
  • Surcharge Weights: Simulate the weight of the pavement structure and traffic loads during testing. 
How the Test is Performed:
  1. 1. Preparation:The test area is prepared by leveling the surface and ensuring the soil is at the desired moisture content and density. 
  2. 2. Assembly:The CBR apparatus is assembled with the penetration piston, extension rods, proving ring, dial gauge, and datum bar. 
  3. 3. Preload:A small preload is applied to the soil to ensure proper contact between the piston and the material. 
  4. 4. Penetration:The loading jack is used to slowly push the piston into the soil at a controlled rate (e.g., 1.25 mm/minute). 
  5. 5. Load and Depth Measurement:The proving ring and dial gauge record the applied load and the corresponding penetration depth. 
  6. 6. Data Analysis:The load and penetration data are used to calculate the CBR value, which is expressed as a percentage. 
Applications:
  • Pavement Design:The CBR test is a fundamental tool for designing flexible pavements, determining the required thickness of pavement layers to support traffic loads.
